Walter Cooper papers, 1912-1923.

Papers consist of essays on a variety of topics, including: history of Bozeman and Gallatin County, Montana; Indian wars; mills and milling in Montana; navigation on the Yellowstone River; Jim Bridger. There are also a few business letters and invoices pertaining to Cooper's business interests in the 1920s and a report issued by the Bozeman Chamber of Commerce in 1912.

Walter Cooper, son of Andrew H. and Sarah E. (McGillvra) Cooper, of Sterling, Cayuga County, New York, was born on July 4, 1843. Six years later the Cooper family moved to Shiawassee County, Michigan. On the death of Andrew Cooper in 1851, Walter was sent to live with a relative in Lansing, Michigan, while the remainder of his family--his mother and five brothers--returned to New York.
